![]() (Edited for structure and clarity, such as it is. (Okay, the enthusiastic responses got my ire up a bit at the end there :-P ) I'm not saying humans won't be useful organs for the next dominant species on this planet.but they're going to be lost in fictional universes like The Expanse, without caring much about the glossy dystopian/utopian future they've slept through. Some self-indulgent power trip through a world of comforting references. I haven't read it, but I'm guessing that Ready Player One is the best "hard sci-fi" available right now. One that's more "natural" than the natural processes that have created the scarily-complex reality we keep turning from with our media and scarily-complex "unnatural" technology. Real, hard sci-fi was always a fantasy concept, but it's properly broken by a generation of media consumers demanding an appeal to a stunted view of humanity. The difference is subtle.because the definition of sci-fi I just put up fits, like, Her and Ex Machina and people who already got a Rift/Vive. All this despite the imminent threat in 2017 of human jobs simply disappearing due to automation. is saved for some one-off plot thread in season 4. Humans are still detectives despite being shit at it, and humans are still operating heavy machinery in zero g despite being shit at it. This show took the assessment of humanity's state in the 1970's and 80's and then extrapolated that out with some advances in storytelling. Science Fiction, the tool of humanity, attempts to accurately assess the state of humanity and then extrapolate outwards. I think I may even prefer it to Game of Thrones. It takes a while to get into, it's very plot heavy, but I'm just midway through season 2 and it's my new favourite show, I feel inspired by it, that's unusual for a TV show. There are good actors in this show however, particularly the dude who plays Miller (best character imo) and the Indian lady. Corey (Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), the show moved to Amazon in 2019, where it's been allowed to truly explore its potential (and its newfound freedom to swear). Based on the hit series of novels by James S.A. I mean in fairness they're not particularly bad actors, just that in the case of the guy playing Holden, he comes across as a Keanu Reeves, but in many ways his character is also like a Keanu Reeves, so it balances out. SyFy premiered science fiction series The Expanse way back in 2015. ![]() The problems with it are: most of the cast are a bit wooden, especially "James Holden can't act!" and Natalie. ![]() On a related note, it's visually exquisite. For example, I know there's a "universe" in Star Trek etc but due to the budget limitations it feels sparse, not so with The Expanse. Hamilton, the world feels so fleshed out and detailed. ![]() For one, I feel like it's the first sci fi show to really convey that "universe" feel you might experience in the works of Peter F. I think it's a great sci fi TV show on par with BSG if not better in some ways. ![]()
